“Creating a Pubic or Private Photography Collection”

Saturday 14 October 2017

Over the last two decades many public and private institutions have opened to the public their photography collections. What are the differences and similarities between the public and private approach to collecting and displaying photography? What does it mean to build an original collection? What are its purpose, its meaning, and its outcome? François Hébel explores this topic with Artur Walther, president of The Walther Collection, Ulm (Germany), collector and curator; Massimo Prelz Oltramonti, collector; Philippe Garner, former Head of Photography at Christie’s; Giovanna Calvenzi, president of the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea, Cinisello Balsamo (Milano), and curator; and Urs Stahel, curator of the Collection and PhotoGallery of MAST.
